Dinosaur National Monument 2015

The national park located near Vernal Utah, Jensen actually. The national park actually lies more in Colorado than Utah. The Colorado component includes a number of long hiking trails and a spectacular view of Steamboat Rock in a deep canyon at the confluence of the Yampa and Green rivers. I have not hiked the Colorado side in many year, possibly over 30 years.

We decided to visit the UT side as this is the location of the quarry visitor center. Originally built in the 1950's and I last saw more than 30 years ago. In the early 2000's the quarry building was closed due to structural issues and was not opened with a new building until the late 2000's. Personally I miss the original building as it had much more for kids to do and was much more engaging. The new building is a basic walk through and ogle the wall of bones. The family seemed to like it.

On the plus side, I had never been hiking on the Utah side and found a number of spectacular hikes through hidden canyons with lush grass and trees, petroglyphs and desert thunder storm clouds.
